Magnet
Magnet:- Those materials which have attractive and directive properties.
Two types of magnet:
- Natural magnet: Which occur naturally, iron ore, lodestone or black iron.
-
Artificial magnet: The magnet which is stronger than natural magnet and have desired shape such as
- Bar magnet
- Magnetic needle
- Horse shoe magnet
- Ball ended magnet
Properties of the magnet:
- Attractive properties: A magnet attract small pieces of iron, nickel, cobalt etc. When brought near the heap of iron fillings, the ends of the magnet shows greatest attraction called poles of the magnet.
- Directive properties: When a magnet is suspended or pivoted freely, it aligns itself in the geographical north-south direction called north and south pole of the magnet respectively.
- Like poles repel and unlike pole attract each other.
- Magnetic poles always exist in pair.
- Magnetic monopoles do not exist.
- A magnet induces magnetism in a magnetic substance placed near it. This phenomenon is called magnetic induction.
