Root and its parts
Parts of a Root:-
A root consists of four zones or regions from the lower most part to the upper most part. These are:
- Root cap
- Meristermatic region
- Zone of elongation
- Maturation Zone
- Root cap: Root cap is present at the apex of root. In Pandanus (Screw pine) Multiple root cap is present while in aquatic plants. i.e. hydrophytes, the apical portion is protected by root pocket in place of root cap, Eichhornia, Pistia, lemna, etc.
- Meristematic Zone:- This zone is present just above the root cap.
- Zone of elongation:- This zone consists of elongated cells. It increases the length of the root.
- Maturation Zone:- This zone is characterized by the presence of unicellular root hairs.
Function of Roots:-
- Roots support the plant by keeping it fixed firmly in the soil.
- Root absorbs water and minerals.
- Roots hold the soil particles together.
- Fleshy root store food inside them.
