Groups of Kingdom Protista
a)Chrysophyta :
i)They includes diatoms and golden algae ( desmids ) . In diatoms , cell wall is indestructible, its being gritty used for polishing, fitration of oil and syrups. Diatoms are chief producers in oceans.
ii) They are found in Fresh water and marine environments.
iii) They are Microscopic and photosynthetic.
b)Dinoflagellates:
i) They are Marine and photosynthetic
ii)They have color yellow, green, blue or red because of color of pigments .
iii) Cell wall is cellulosic having 2 flagella
iv) Red dionflagellate (Gonyaulax ) forms red tides and toxins are released.
c) Euglenoid :
i) They are fresh water organisms generally found in stagnant water.
ii)They do not have cell wall but protein rich layer is present, called pellicle.
iii) They have 2 flagella.
iv) They are Myxotrophic, because Photosynthetic (in light) Heterotrophs (when no light).
Myxotrophs are organisms which are mixture of both autotrophs and heterotrophs.
eg. Euglena
d) Slime moulds:
i)They are Saprophytic
ii) The body moves along decaying twigs and leaves
iii) During suitable conditions forms aggregation called plasmodium (mass of slime moulds)
iv) During unfavourable conditions form spores and survive for many years.
e) Protozoans :They are Heterotrophs .There are 4 major groups;
· Amoeboid protozoans. They lives in Fresh water, sea and moist soil .They use pseudopodia to capture prey. Their marine forms have silica shells . Entamoeba (parasite) cause Amoebic dysentery
· Flagellated protozoans : They are free living / parasites. They have flagella.Their parasitic form causes diseases such as Sleeping sickness. Trypanorom is a parasite of flagellated protozoans.
· Ciliated protozoans – They are aquatic and moves using cilia. They have a cavity (gullet) that opens to the outside of the cell surface. The coordinated movement of rows of cilia causes the water laden with food to be steered into the gullet. eg. Paramoecium.
· Sporozoans – They have infectious spore-like stage in their life cycle. For Example Plasmodium causes malarial fever.
