Bud

Bud:-

A bud is a condensed young shoot with underdeveloped leaves. Cabbage is the largest bud.

There are three types of buds- (i) vegetative (ii) floral (iii) modified

According to position buds can be Lateral or terminal.

Lateral Buds: These are of four types:

  • Axillary:- Present in the axil of leaf
  • Accessory:- Additional buds occurring either on the side or above the axillary bud.
  • Extra axillary:- Developing on the node but outside the leaf base.
  • Adventitious buds:- Formed from places other than nodes of stem or branches. These can be:
  • Cauline buds: These buds arise directly from the stem. e.g. jackfruit (Artocarpus)
  • Radical buds: These buds develop on the roots; e.g. sweet potato, Ipecac, Dalbergia, Ipomoea
  • Foliar buds: These are the buds which develop on the leaves; e.g. Bryophyllum, Begonia
